Welcome Community and Alumni Judges!

Thank you for considering serving as a community judge at the Colonial Classic speech and debate tournament! Your participation makes it possible for the tournament to run smoothly and gives students a real audience for their hard work. Our competitors spend the season developing strong communication, critical thinking, and character, and your thoughtful feedback is a key part of that growth.

No prior judging experience is needed. Clear, simple training will be provided when you arrive, and our friendly staff will walk you through each step of the process. Below you will find some basic information to help you get started.

If you are ready to register, please use the button in the bottom right corner of the page to sign up as a judge and select the times that work best for your schedule. Please plan to arrive one hour before your first round for orientation and training.

Why Judge?

Meaningful impact — Your input and feedback helps shape the next generation of articulate Christian leaders.

Short time commitment — Just 2–3 hours to judge one round, with a lasting impact on students.

Warm hospitality — Enjoy delicious refreshments and a welcoming atmosphere as our guest.

Valued contribution — We need you! A tournament truly cannot exist without the help of community judges.

You Are Qualified!

You are qualified to judge! The goal of our competitors is to be able to communicate their ideas clearly and respectfully to anyone. If you are a good listener who is over 18 and graduated high school, WE NEED YOU!

Time Commitment for Judges

Please arrive 1 hour prior to your selected speech and/or debate round in order to receive orientation and training. This is approximately a 3-hour time commitment and includes:

  • Check-in
  • Judge training and orientation
  • Judging a round
  • Completing your ballot
  • Enjoying refreshments

You are always welcome to judge more than one round!

Important: Please avoid back-to-back judging assignments. Leave at least one round between your selected time slots so you can complete and submit ballots and provide quality feedback without delaying the next round.

What to Expect on Tournament Day

Judge Training: You will receive a comprehensive overview of the events and the judging process. We have several types of debate and speeches, and you will be trained in the event or event category you are registered for.

Check-in: Follow campus signs to the judge check-in table upon arrival. You'll receive an email with detailed check-in and orientation information approximately one week prior to the tournament.

After the round: Please plan 20–30 minutes to complete your ballot and provide helpful feedback to competitors.
