• Setup:

  This status is used while the tournament is still being setup.

• Open:

  This status means tournament registration is open. Families can register for the tournament.

• Drops Only:

  This status means only registration drops are allowed. There are no new entries allowed but families can drop entries.

• Closed:

  This status means registration is currently closed for the tournament. There are no adds or drops allowed. Please contact the tournament director with any questions.

• Completed:

  This status means the tournament is completed.

ENTRY FEES & DEADLINES

Registration Closes: Monday, March 3, 2025 at 8:00 PM PST

FEES

$40 for debate event

$25 for each speech event.

$15 for each junior speech event.

Students may register for a maximum of 6 speech events (3 per pattern).

Please use discretion when signing up for events and only register for the number that you feel confident you can handle during a round of 1 hour and 45 minutes. We are unable to delay the tournament if someone comes late to their last speech in a round.

Payment is due at the time of registration.

DUOS: Your duo partner must also be registered and paid to confirm that you are registered in the duo event.

REFUNDS

• From the opening of registration on February 17 to the close of registration on March 3 refunds are available.

• From the close of registration on March 3 until March 10 no refunds are available but no drop fees apply.

• After March 10th, no refunds are available and a drop fee of $25 per event applies.

• The drop fee increases from $25 per event to $30 per event at the end of the day on March 30th.

DROP FEES

In order to be eligible to compete in your other events, drop fees must be paid prior to the tournament. There will be a $25 fee for ANY event that is dropped on or before March 30th.  After March 30th, the drop fee increases to $30 per event.  In order to be eligible to compete in your other events, this fee must be paid in cash at student check-in before the tournament begins.

You may drop events with no drop fee until March 10th.  Simply log into your registration and drop the events.  After March 10th, drop fees apply and you need to notify the registrar if you wish to drop an event.

THINK TWICE - REGISTER ONCE:

What do we mean? Once you register, please do NOT drop an event. Consider carefully before registering for events – do I have time to prepare for all the events I am registering for?

1.  Registration is a commitment to compete.
2.  It creates a great deal of work for volunteer staff running registration.
3.  It creates a serious disruption for the tournament
4.  Tabulation must revise postings
5.  Trophies and awards are disrupted
6.  It can create cost waste because it affects the awards order
7.  It can create a situation where we do not have the minimum number of competitors which causes us to cancel an event.

For the fifth time, ICC will offer junior events.  It has been such a blessing to watch the juniors compete in prior years and we look forward to them doing so again this year.  We will host two rounds of junior apologetics, junior cold reading, junior impromptu and junior platforms. 

Eligibility: Junior events are open to any student who, as of October 1, 2024, was 6,7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 years old.  In other words, if you are eligible to compete in Stoa (i.e. 12 or older as of October 1, 2024) you are not eligible for junior events.  Only our young students who are not eligible to compete in Stoa events may compete in junior events.

Parents, please use discretion in deciding to register very young competitors. If your child will not be able to stand in front of judges and speak without you prompting them, we advise against entering them into the competition.

Cost: The cost of junior events is $15 per event.

Time: The times for the rounds are listed on the tournament schedule.  The first round will occur late Friday afternoon and the second round will occur on Saturday morning.

Judges: Our elder competitors will serve as judges for the junior's tournament. However, in order to judge juniors, students must be 14 years or older and have one or more prior years of competition experience.

Attire: Tournament attire is Sunday best.

Platform speeches include original oratory, persuasive, and expository. Speeches should be approximately 5 minutes long. All platform events will be held in the same room.

Cold reading competitors will receive a one-page selection of age-appropriate literature to read aloud to the judges. There is a 2-minute prep time for the student to review the selection before then presenting it aloud to the judges using creativity and vocal intonation. There is no time limit for this event.

Impromptu speeches shall be three minutes long with two minutes of preparation time.  There is no penalty for speaking as long as five minutes.  After five minutes and 14 seconds, a penalty would be appropriate.

Apologetics speeches shall be four minutes long with three minutes of preparation time.  There is no penalty for speaking as long as six minutes and 14 seconds.  After six minutes and 14 seconds, a penalty would be appropriate.

Topics: The tournament will use the following apologetic topics during both rounds of junior apologetics:

1. What does it mean that God is triune? Why is this important?

2. What does it mean that God is omniscient? Why is this important?

3. What does it mean that God is omnipresent? Why is this important?

4. What does it mean for man to repent from his sins? Why is this important?

5. What does it mean that Jesus Christ is the Messiah? Why is this important?

6. What is the Gospel, and why is it the core of the Christian faith?

7. Is there more than one way to heaven?

8. What is the role of the Holy Spirit? Why is this important?

9. What is the importance of prayer?

10. Can a person do enough good in their life to get into heaven?

11. What are the unique features of Christianity that set it apart from all other religions of the world?

12. What evidence is there for the existence of God in our physical universe?

For apologetics and Mars Hill, students should prepare for all categories.  The Inland Club Challenge occurs in late spring and less than a month before the regular season ends.  For this reason, we use competition conditions more similar to NITOC.  NITOC occurs the month after the Inland Club Challenge and at NITOC, of course, students must prepare for all topics.  So, we do the same.  We want our tournament to help prepare you to compete at NITOC.

After script approval, you will print your approval email, attach it to your complete script package, and then bring them both to the tournament. You will not turn in your script but have it available if requested by the tournament staff.

c. Combine all documents (submission form and script ) into one file.

d. Name the file appropriately. The file name should be as follows: Last, first, event type, document type

3. For Platform speeches, be sure to cite sources, both in-text and orally, and include a Citation page.

4. For Expository speeches, cite graphic sources separately.

5. Do not submit incomplete or partial submissions.

6. Please double-check the guidance and rules for each event on the Stoa website. All submissions are expected to be in compliance with the Stoa rules.

7. If your initial script submission needs to be changed or is incomplete, we will tell you what it needs to be approved. When you resubmit your script, it will be treated as a new submission.

8. You will be sent an email notifying you if your script submission has been approved or unapproved. Print and save your approved script email – attach it to your script and bring them both to the tournament.

There is plenty of parking at Immanuel Baptist Church.  All competitors and their families should feel free to park in any of the large lots surrounding the church.

But please do NOT park in the small parking lot at the center of the campus.  That is where church staff likes to park and they have asked us to not use that lot during the tournament.  

Also, please do not park in the spots directly next to church buildings.  The church has a preschool and parents need those spots to pickup and drop off kids.  So please avoid the spots directly next to the A, C and D buildings.  Please let the staff and other campus guests use those spots.  Thank you!

The Inland Club Challenge follows and uses the standard Stoa tabulations procedures set forth in the Stoa Joy of Tournaments Tabulation Instructions. 

Power Matching: Yes, we intend to power match preliminary debate rounds starting in the third round.  The first two debate rounds will be paired randomly.  We plan to power match the third, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds.

Affirmative/Negative Arguments: As is customary, every debate team should have an equal number of affirmative and negative preliminary rounds.  In very rare instances, the computer will give a team four affirmative rounds and two negative rounds (or vice versa).  If this happens, feel free to contact the tab room if you have any questions or concerns.

Club Protection: We use standard club protection to the maximum extent possible in speech and debate rounds.  In some circumstances, club protection is not possible in late preliminary debate rounds.  There is no club protection in debate outrounds and minimal club protection in speech outrounds.

Club Protection and Mixed TP or Parli Teams: If a team policy or parli team consists of two people from different clubs, we maximize club protection by allocating club protection to the club of the team member who has the most other teams and list the team under that club name on tournament postings, at break announcements and during the awards ceremony.  We would be very grateful if you would not request special individual exceptions to this procedure.

Mixed Teams and Speechranks: Neither we nor any other tournament can control how mixed team policy teams are listed on Speechranks.  We have no control over which club Speechranks uses when listing the mixed team.  After the tournament, we upload the club data for each member of each mixed team to Speechranks and then Speechranks picks which club name to use for the mixed team when listing it on Speechranks.  Our understanding is that the Speechranks computer program uses the club name for the team member who had a Speechranks account first (i.e. the team member who started competing first).  This is explained on the Speechranks website.
