Congratulations on a successful season and for qualifying for the Stoa 2026 National Invitational Tournament of Champions in Extemporaneous Speaking!
1. The Extemp Preparation (Prep) Room is located on the ground floor of the library. This is the Logos building on the campus map.
2. Extemp draw times will be posted early (before other postings), both online and outside the Extemp Prep Room, in order to aid your planning. It is your responsibility to know your own draw time and to arrive on time.
3. You may bring your laptop into the Extemp Prep Room at your draw time. You should take your laptop with you when you leave the Prep Room to speak. Do not leave your belongings in the Extemp Prep Room before or after the round. We will not be responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen items.
4. Label EVERYTHING with your name, club name, and phone number - laptops, file boxes, power cords, extension cords, etc.
5. Make sure that your laptop is fully charged before your prep time. You may not have access to an electrical outlet in the Extemp Prep Room.
6. You must check in with the Proctor at the start of your prep time and check out when your prep time is over.
7. During prep time we will have a visible clock and we will call out time notifications regarding remaining prep time. It is your responsibility to arrive promptly at your competition room and speak at your designated speaker time.
8. As a reminder, your speech must be an original work, prepared during the Extemp preparation time. Competitors may not bring pre-written speeches, outlines, or cards into the Extemp Prep Room. This includes, but is not limited to, research papers, debate cases, previous Extemp cards, podcast transcripts, etc. No prepared analysis will be allowed. Please check with the Extemp Proctor if you have specific questions.
9. From the rules: Possession and/or use of any Internet-connected device and/or accessing information located outside the Extemp Prep Room is forbidden from the competitor's draw time until their speech is concluded. Proctors will be checking to see if you are connected to Wi-Fi. Upon entering the Extemp Prep Room, your Wi-Fi location will be marked with a “Post-it” arrow. Please note : Your Wi-Fi must be off. Airplane mode being turned on is not sufficient. Also, if you do not wish to be asked frequently to see your Wi-Fi, please turn your “taskbar auto-hide” off.
10. If you are sharing a computer or other prep resources with another competitor, the coach or parent of the loaning competitor must email that information in advance to Dovey Elliott at doveyelliott@gmail.com .
11. Remember, according to the Extemp Prep Room Protocol, “Competitors may not talk in the Extemp Prep Room.” This policy will be enforced at NITOC 2026.
